Main Sectors: Pharmaceuticals & Life Sciences, Utilities, Oil & Gas, Food and Beverage, Power Generation

Experience with workplace innovation

Greater transparency and measures to engage staff, reducing functional silos and stimulating employee-driven innovation. 60+ ideas generated by employees; Martin Welsh (MD) argues that WIEP has placed the company 12 months ahead of its competitors.

(*) Until recently Edwin led Bombardier’s Global Procurement and Supply Chain and was responsible for some 15,000 people. Previously he was CEO of the Belgian division (a plant in Bruges with 900 people). He managed to transform this whole traditional tram producing site into the most productive site in the Bombardier family. In his most recent role, he has been asked to lead the cultural transformation of global procurement and the company’s supply chain to create a “shining island” of good practice.

The experience of European nothern companies …

…tell us that each company made tangible changes in working practice, including self-managed teams, employee involvement in improvement and innovation, reducing functional silos and hierarchies, changing management roles and behaviours, eliminating low-trust systems and procedures, delegating decision-making, greater openness and transparency, introducing or revitalising employee forums, and building more inclusive approaches to leadership. Companies enhanced profitability and competitiveness by improving cost control, workflow, decision-making, quality, customer service and capacity for innovation.

We will discuss strategies taken, like…

• Building eco-systems of innovation;
• Enabling Digital and Organisational Readiness, drawing on international evidence and experience adopting workplace innovation;
• Building workforce receptiveness to digital change;
• Maximise the synergies between human and digital potential, building on the tacit knowledge, skills and creativity of your workforce;
• Upskill people to manage technologies in house and to take on self-management roles associated with leaner and flatter organisational structures, based on agile governance models;

INNOVATIVE CONFERENCE 2018
| AEP | Matosinhos |

Algumas fotos que evidenciam a satisfação dos 80 participantes na Workshop Master Class and Fresh Thinking Lab sobre Workplace Innovation in Practice realizado no dia 5 de maio de 2018 na AEP, Matosinhos.

 Workplace Innovation em maio de 2017
| Fundação Gulbenkian | Lisboa |

On 1st and 2nd June 2017 the annual conference of the Portuguese Institute for Business Process Management – IPBPM, took place. This completed a 10 year cycle of the BPM Lisbon conference, fostering BPM practices which address strategic, operational and technological perspectives.

We concluded that institutions in general were more readily adopting the operational and technological practices than the strategic ones. Meanwhile many issues were coming up, like the lack of strategic alignment of business processes and technology, returns on investment much lower than expected, and difficulties in involving employees in business transformation projects.

So we decided to begin a new cycle of conferences reinforcing the organisational innovation practices, beginning with the INNOVATIVE CONFERENCE 2017.

The programme offered the opportunity to discuss several Portuguese case studies that revealed the great potential of workplace innovation practices; these were not very well known in the Portuguese community.

In this context, the whole afternoon that Steven Dhondt and Peter Totterdill ran, as coordinators of EUWIN Network, was fantastic.

“Workplace Innovation: how to get companies to start the change?” was the theme presented by Steven, followed by EUWIN’s film: The Fifth Element. The concept of workplace innovation, its benefits and the five Elements were transmitted in a very comprehensive way. Ending his talk, Steven discussed how behaviour issues and resistance to change create a barrier to the adoption of workplace innovation.

Then the stories of Edwin Van Vlierberghe (Bombardier), Ton Driessen (RESATO) and António Conde (iPlanus) helped the participants to understand what workplace innovation can deliver to companies and organisations. It was very interesting for the audience to hear directly, in the first person and from those who had experienced and led the change projects, the details of those case studies. Ton stressed “We want to be a learning organisation where everyone seeks the best solution for our customer”.

Teamwork and continued management attention were integral to Edwin’s approach, in which “Operators in the production teams are now held accountable for team performance”. António explained how “Empowerment is clearly related to associate involvement and this is felt strongly as the key to positive change”.

At the end, Peter Totterdill explained The Fifth Element further including the Short Diagnostic on workplace innovation.

During the second day, Peter Housden shared his experience leading the project that the Scottish Government had pursued in adopting a distinctive and innovative approach to organisational design and workplace practices. Jorge Coelho (IPBPM and SisConsult) presented his approach to model organisations in terms of self-directed teams, using systemic criteria and specific governance rules to assure effective strategic alignment and accountability.

Steven and Peter challenged us to progress towards a Portuguese eco-system for workplace innovation.
